TOKIMATSU — Let a Smile be Your Umbrella

Okinawa Soba did not remove the background via PhotoShop. This "isolation" of Tokimatsu was just another Meiji-era manipulation of the image.
In other cases (as you can see in this Set) all or parts of the background were darkened or blackened for effect as well.
Back then, commercial photographers and publishers screwed around with their photos almost as much as creative folks do today.
Of course, over 100 years ago when all of these photos were made, they didn’t have computers, or the wild tools of PhotoShop software to help them out.
To the contrary, it was all done with scissors, glue, brushes, dodging and burning in the darkroom, stripping emulsion from the glass, re-printing under the sun with hand-cut mattes and masks, and any other number of tedious methods to come up with many of the collages and vignettes you see on this old photostream.
